Trees can be a beautiful addition to anyone's property. They provide much appreciated shade on hot summer days, but can also create problems for citizens when they grow into power lines. Storm damage is the number one cause of unscheduled power outages. Wind, ice, snow and rain-saturated ground can cause tree limbs or entire trees to come down into power lines, causing power outages. In an effort to keep our electrical system as reliable as possible, Gardner Energy undertakes an ongoing program of tree trimming in the community.

Crews generally visit neighborhoods once every two to three years and will make necessary cuts to ensure overall safety. Every effort is made to accommodate the homeowner's wishes when trimming; however, the overriding concern is to make the electric system safe and reliable. A professional tree service is contracted to perform foliage clearance.

If you need to have the service wire on a pole-to-house line dropped so you can either safely remove a tree or limbs or have a contractor do the work, we can do so at no charge.  Because this is a customer maintenance item, we do not, however, remove the debris. Call Gardner Energy at 856-7256 to arrange for a supervisor to visit your property and schedule a date to accommodate your request.

If you want to remove a tree that has limbs above a pole-to-pole line or hire a contractor to remove it, we will inspect the line at no charge and decide whether we need to make it safe for you to remove the tree. If necessary, we trim or remove the limbs so you can have the tree safely removed. The homeowner is responsible for debris removal.

Remember: when planting trees, plant them 30' from power poles, 10' from underground primary electric cables and 10' from your home's underground service cables. Plant trees and shrubs 10' from the front and 3' from the sides of a pad-mount transformer. Always call for locates before you dig. The Kansas One Call number is 1-800-Dig-Safe (1-800-344-7233).
