Line Maintenance staff are responsible for maintaining the sanitary sewer collection system, which collects and delivers wastewater to the Kill Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. They maintain approximately 95 miles of gravity and forced sewer mains and approximately 3,500 manholes. The sewer lines are constructed of vitrified clay pipe, PVC truss pipe, and SDR pipe, ranging in size from 8 inches to 30 inches in diameter.
The line maintenance staff clean 100% of the City-owned sewer lines on an annual basis as part of the sewer cleaning program, which has been highly effective in preventing or reducing sewer main backups.
Why do sewers back up? Anything that blocks the pipe can cause the sewer to back up. Tree roots, clothing, plastics, diapers, abnormal debris, and cooking grease can all accumulate and block the flow of the sewer. Be wise and careful - be sure that what you flush or drain into the sewer will not cause it to block. For more information, read about Sewer Backups.
To report sewer issues, please email or call 913-856-0980, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. If there is a sewer emergency outside of business hours, please call 913-856-6802.
