The goal of this project is to improve safety and enhance traffic flow.

Project Overview

This project will widen Waverly Road to three lanes from 175^th Street to Fountain Street, overlay Waverly from US-56 to 175^th Street, build-out of the intersection at Madison Street, and improve the north leg of the US-56 and Waverly intersection. The project will tie into the improvements recently completed on Santa Fe and includes a trail on the east side of Waverly Road, open ditches and street lighting. A trail is also included on the north side of 175th Street from Waverly Road to Kill Creek Road.

Project Status/Construction Updates

Phase 1, from King Court to Fountain Street: Open to traffic 08/2021 (Sidewalk and restoration to be completed by early 12/2021.)
Phase 2A, 172 Terrace to King Court: Open to traffic 09/2021 (Sidewalk and restoration to be completed by early 12/2021.)
Phase 2B, 175th Street to 172nd Terrace is scheduled to be completed by 12/2021
Phase 3, 175th Street to US-56 is scheduled to begin early 2022 and completed by 5/2022

Traffic Impacts

TRAFFIC ALERT - March 24, 2022
Waverly Road, between Santa Fe Street and US-56 Highway, will close on Tuesday, March 29, to allow crews to replace the pavement. This work is part of the Waverly Road improvements, which also includes constructing a trail from Waverly Road to Kill Creek Road north of 175th Street. Motorists should follow the detour. This phase of the project is expected to be completed by late May 2022.
TRAFFIC ALERT - September 28, 2021
A traffic switch on Waverly Road will occur Wednesday, Sept. 29, after 4 p.m. This switch requires the City of Gardner to close Waverly Road between 175th Street/Santa Fe Street and 172nd Terrace/Blazer Drive. Blazer Drive can be accessed from the north via Waverly Road and from the west via 172nd Terrace. Motorists should allow plenty of extra travel time to access Gardner Edgerton High School beginning Thursday morning.
TRAFFIC ALERT - September 23, 2021
At 7 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, the City of Gardner will temporarily close Waverly Road from 175th Street/Santa Fe Street to King Court for asphalt pavement installation. Motorists will need to use an alternate route. The roadway is expected to reopen the same day by 5 p.m.
TRAFFIC ALERT - September 9, 2021
On Monday, Sept. 13, the City of Gardner will close eastbound Santa Fe Street between Waverly Road and US-56 for intersection improvements. Motorists should take an alternate route. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by Monday, Sept. 20. For questions, contact the Public Works Department at 913.856.0914.
TRAFFIC ALERT - August 23
On Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Waverly Road between 172nd Terrace and Santa Fe Street will be temporarily closed to install a stormwater crossing. Should the project not be completed by 2:30 p.m., the construction crew will open 172nd Terrace directly across from Blazer Drive for Gardner Edgerton High School traffic. TRAFFIC ALERT- August 14, 2021
To help alleviate traffic issues around Gardner Edgerton High School, phasing of the Waverly Road construction is being modified to open Waverly Road from Santa Fe Street (175th Street) to the school entrance at Blazer Drive (170th Terrace). Access to side streets between Santa Fe and Blazer Drive will remain closed.
TRAFFIC ALERT- August 10, 2021
Waverly Road and Madison Street is now open to traffic. Waverly Road from 175th St./Santa Fe St. is now closed to Madison Street. Access to King Court can be made from Madison Street only.
TRAFFIC ALERT- June 29, 2021
On Friday, July 2, at 6 a.m., the City of Gardner will close Waverly Road, from King Court to Fountain Street/170th St., for Phase 1 of the Waverly Road Improvement Project. Work includes street widening, storm sewer upgrades and sidewalk installation. Motorists should follow the signed detour. Weather permitting, this portion of Waverly Road will reopen by Aug. 11.
