US-56/Main Street Road Improvements
This project is jointly funded by the city and KDOT and stretches nearly a mile long along US-56 from Sycamore Street to Old 56. The primary components of the project will include:
- full-depth pavement reconstruction,
- removal and replacement of curb and gutter,
- driveway and sidewalk enhancements,
- a new traffic signal at the intersection between QuikTrip and Walgreens,
- signal timing interconnection between the new signal and the existing signal at Moonlight,
- reduction/combining of access points, and
- a new left-turn lane for eastbound traffic at Cedar Street.
- The project was advertised for bid in late September.
- Letting occurred on Oct. 20, 2021.
- KDOT awarded the construction contract in Dec. 2021
- Pre-construction meeting held Jan. 18, 2022
- Open House scheduled for Feb. 3, 2022
- Work expected to begin February 2022
- EB lanes from Sycamore to Moonlight completed – October 2022
- Traffic switched to the newly constructed south lanes. Work beginning on the north lanes - November 2022
Traffic will be reduced to one-lane each direction throughout construction and access to businesses along US-56 will be maintained. Read the latest update below:
- Wednesday, July 5 (1:30 p.m.)
KDOT contractors will continue to place concrete on US-56/Main Street east of Moonlight Road on Thursday, July 6. Westbound and eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane with no left turns to southbound Moonlight Road allowed for a portion of the day. Flaggers will direct traffic. Motorists should expect delays and consider using an alternate route. Contact the Public Works Department with any questions at 913.856.0914.
- Tuesday, June 27 (4:00 p.m.)
On Friday, June 30, KDOT contractors will place concrete on US-56/Main Street east of Moonlight Road. Westbound and eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane with no left turns to southbound Moonlight Road allowed for a portion of the day. Flaggers will direct traffic. Motorists should expect delays and consider using an alternate route. Contact the Public Works Department with any questions at 913.856.0914.
- Friday, June 2, 2023 (4:15 p.m.)
On Tuesday, June 6, KDOT's contractors will close the outside lanes of US-56/Main Street, east of Moonlight Road, to begin the next construction phase. Only one turn lane on southbound Moonlight Road to eastbound US-56/Main Street will be available, and the ramp from southbound New Century Parkway to westbound US-56/Main Street will be closed during this time. A detour will be provided.
- Tuesday, May 2, 2023 (2:24 p.m.)
On Thursday, May 4, and Friday, May 5, the Kansas Department of Transportation will reduce US-56/Main Street to one lane from Moonlight Road to Sycamore Street. This allows crews to install the next lanes of concrete. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone. Motorists should expect significant delays and are strongly encouraged to use an alternate route.
- Friday, April 7, 2023 (2:42 p.m.) - (REOPENED on April 24, 2023)
All lanes of Moonlight Road, north of US-56/Main Street to Lincoln Lane, will be closed starting Monday, April 10. Left turns from westbound US-56/Main Street to southbound Moonlight Road will also be prohibited. This will allow crews to continue pavement replacement work as part of the overall US-56/Main Street improvement project. The closure is expected to last up to three weeks.
- Wednesday, March 22, 2023 (12:15 p.m.)
UPDATE!!! Mulberry Street will reopen by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 24.
On Thursday, March 23, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., contractors will again close the north side of Mulberry Street at US-56/Main Street to continue pavement removal, grading and aggregate base installation. Motorists will need to find an alternate route.
- Tuesday, March 14, 2023 (2:36 p.m.)
Tomorrow, March 15, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., contractors will close the north side of Mulberry Street at US-56/Main Street for pavement removal, grading and aggregate base installation. Motorists will need to find an alternate route.
- Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023 (4:00 p.m.)
Weather permitting, N. White Drive at US-56/Main Street will be closed on Thursday, Feb. 23, for pavement removal, grading and aggregate base installation. Contractors plan to reopen the road by Friday, Feb. 24. Motorists will need to find an alternate route.
- Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022 (1:07 p.m.)
Contractors are currently in the process of switching traffic over to the new lanes. The switch should be completed by the end of today, November 3. Motorists should expect minor delays while new traffic markings are being installed.
- Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022 (11:52 p.m.)
North and southbound lanes of Moonlight Road are now partially open to traffic. Contractors expect the remaining sections of Moonlight Road to be opened on Friday, Nov. 4, weather permitting.
- Monday, Oct. 10, 2022 (11:00 a.m.)
All lanes of Moonlight Road, from US-56/Main Street to Warren Street, will be closed starting on Wednesday, Oct. 12. This will allow crews to continue pavement replacement work as part of the US-56/Main Street project. The closure is expected to last up to a month. Motorists should plan to take alternate routes.

Access to Mulberry Street from Main Street is now open. A stop sign is being used to control traffic from Mulberry Street onto Main Street. For any questions, contact the Public Works Department at 913.856.0914.
- Tuesday, July 5, 2022 (4:47 p.m.)
At 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, the Kansas Department of Transportation will reduce US-56/Main Street to one lane from Cedar Street to Sycamore Street. This allows crews to install the next lane of concrete. During this time, flaggers will direct traffic flow through the work zone. Work is scheduled to be completed by 6 p.m. Motorists should expect major delays and are strongly encouraged to use an alternate route.

On Tuesday, March 8, the Kansas Department of Transportation will be patching potholes in the open lanes of U.S. 56/Main Street. Expect delays or consider using an alternate route.
- Wednesday, March 2, 2022 ( 2:00 p.m.)
Both directions of traffic on US-56/Main Street have been moved to the two westbound lanes. Please note, no left turns are permitted at Moonlight Road for motorists traveling eastbound.
- Tuesday, March 1, 2022 (4:30 p.m.)
On Wednesday, March 2, the Kansas Department of Transportation will move both directions of traffic to the two westbound lanes on US-56/Main Street, from Elm Street to Old 56 Highway. This road configuration allows reconstruction work to be performed on the two eastbound lanes. Crews will complete this phase of the project by early June 2022, weather permitting.
- Monday, Feb. 28, 2022 (5:30p.m.)
The Kansas Department of Transportation will temporarily close the two center lanes from Elm Street to Old 56 Highway on Tuesday, March 1, to perform striping necessary for the project. Motorists will use the outside lanes while this work is being completed.
