As the public water utility, the City of Gardner strives to ensure that the public water system provides safe, clean, and dependable water to the community.

The water source for the City of Gardner is Hillsdale Reservoir.  The Hillsdale Water Treatment Plant was constructed in 1998, and updated and expanded in 2006.  the facility is capable of treating up to 4.0 million gallons of water daily.   The City stores more than 3,000,000 gallons of water in above and below ground  storage tanks.

Equally important to water availability is the water quality.  To raise and maintain Gardner's water quality above required standards, the City has constructed looped lines within the system to increase water flow, and recently installed a new filtration system at the Hillsdale Water Treatment Plant.   Random water samples are collected monthly from fifteen different locations throughout the community.   Samples are analyzed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, ensuring the quality of water and compliance with state and federal regulations.
