Don’t miss Gardner’s Annual Community 4th of July fireworks event at Gardner–Edgerton High School at dusk on Saturday, July 4th. The Shawnee Civic Band will be entertaining with patriotic music at 7:45 p.m. This event is sponsored by local Gardner businesses, citizen donations and the City of Gardner.

No Fireworks Allowed within Gardner City Limits

The Public Safety Department would like to inform all residents of the Fireworks Ordinance.  Gardner Ordinance 2293 Section 10.30  prohibits the discharge of fireworks and similar devices.  Violation of this section is an unclassified misdemeanor.
Gardner Public Safety Department has a NO TOLERANCE policy for fireworks.  Fireworks will be confiscated and offenders will be given notice to appear in Gardner Municipal Court for any fireworks violations occurring within the City limits.
 

Commemorative Air Force of New Century to Host an Open House -July 11 & 12, 2009

Intermodal and Logistics Park Update
On June 22nd, 2009, at a Special City Council meeting the City Council voted to rescind the current agreements (Annexation, Financial, and Project) for the Intermodal Facility and Logistics Park, authorize all necessary steps to deannex the property and request BNSF, the Allen Group, and Johnson County to negotiate new agreements. June is National Safety Month
Join the City of Gardner in opportunities to learn more about safety for work and home. Check the City of Gardner homepage weekly during June for updated safety tips. Tip of the Week: Fireworks Safety
Each July 4th, thousands of people, mostly children and teens, are injured while using fireworks.  Leave fireworks to the professionals.  The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. 
 
KDOT Launches New U.S.- 56 Corridor Management Plan Web Site
A driver on U.S. 56 Highway from just west of Baldwin City to its intersection with I-35 in Olathe experiences variety: a farm implement dealer and a facility that employs 300, a windmill and an oil pumpjack, a downtown and a regional park. KDOT has partnered with Douglas and Johnson Counties, Baldwin City, Edgerton, Gardner, and MARC to begin a 15-month Corridor Management Plan process to improve access management and capacity along U.S. 56 Highway in a way that supports the needs and addresses the concerns of the Corridor communities. Artwork Donated to the City of Gardner by Artist William Howe
On June 15th, Mr. William Howe was recognized by the City of Gardner for his recent art donation to the community.  Mr.  Howe is an internationally recognized expert on butterflies and moths. He is known in the art world as the “ The Butterfly Man” .

Howe moved to Ottawa with his family as a small child, where he graduated from Ottawa High School and Ottawa University with a degree in Biology.  After finishing his degree, Howe attended the Kansas City Art Institute and the West Coast Institute of Art at Berkeley.  He became interested in butterflies through his father's, who was an entomologist for the United States Department of Agriculture.  Mr. Howe began drawing butterflies as a tiny child and has a sketchbook filled with perfect drawings done in his seventh year. Thousands of paintings and drawings later, and even following a stroke, he is still working every day. He usually works in acrylics, though he recently did some in watercolor at the request of a client.

Mr. Howe’s paintings are hanging in over fifty museums and public offices in the United States, Canada, and Mexico; and he has two published books on butterflies.  The City of Gardner thanks him for his generous donation to our community that will be enjoy for many years to come!
